Amethyst, pictured right, is an excellent stone for calming and healing. It's even said to deter fleas! Amethyst has a long and fascinating history, believed to be a stone of healing, integrity, purity, and faith. It was in use by Neolithic cultures as long ago as 25,000 B.C. Often called the "all-healer", amethyst is one fo the most effective crystals for any type of healing work. In its calming role, it soothes anger and impatience and relieves excessive anxiety and hyperactivity. Amethyst is also said to moderate excessive barking in dogs, yowling in cats, and screeching in birds!

Amethyst has an extremely long and interesting history, beginning with Neolithic cultures in Europe as far back as 25,000 B.C. and as far-flung as ancient Egypt. Egyptian soldiers wore it into battle to porevent loss of courage. The Greeks and Romans placed high value on it, and it has long been viewed as a stone of royalty, utilized in crowns, scepters, and the rings of bishops. It is said to have been the 9th stone in the breastplate of Abraham, and one of the 10 stones upon which the names of the ancient tribes of Israel were inscribed. It's name comes from a Greek word meaning 'not drunken', and is the source of the Greek legend concerning Bacchus. The Greeks believed that amethyst would prevent intoxication, calm anger, and relieve frustrated passion. Amethyst is also the stone of the Buddha and is popular in Buddhist prayer beads, especially in Tibet.

Amethyst is a member of the quartz family with a trigonal crystal system and a hardness of 7. Its color, which varies from pale to deep purple, id derived from the trace amounts of iron and aluminum, plus natural or applied irradiation.
